Greatness: Spoken Truths. This compelling documentary pays tribute to Rev. Dr. Katie G. Cannon with her kitchen table interview style. The director has conversations with women of color that span topics from their definition of a woman to defining greatness. The interviewees cover topics that some women would love to hear and others would love to be reminded of. Each woman celebrates her being with poetry/spoken word.
It came from a place where the director realized greatness was needed. After making his first film Game of Love he was excited and ready for what was coming next. However self-actualization allowed him to see there were plenty of things that needed to be corrected before moving on to the blockbuster movies he was destined to make. The audio could be better. The camera work needed to be sharper. The turnaround time in editing needed to be quicker and things like that. So instead of giving up and not learning from the lesson that was in front of him.
The director God Mother came to town and sat at his grandmother’s house and talked for hours about everything under the sun. In a way that was welcoming and engaging but also scholarly and simple. Discussing what the next steps were were on hold because He and his wife just had a baby. And the director God Mother had no biological children so he wanted to do something to bring the generations together. Also, his daughter was born a day after her birthday. Black Woman Liberation Theology is a perfect combination right?
The Director reached out to one of his best friends and said ” lets make a movie about what is to be a woman and I need your help.” She said ” Sure because you are not a woman.” Greatness Spoken Truths was made.
