I never wanted to be a teacher. Low Pay. Long Hours. Always having to be the adult in the room. For me, it started when I was a child and checking papers for my mother who was a civil and economics teacher. During those times I realized that it was never going to be put on the padstil that I saw my mother on every night, caring for the students while they were living their lives at football, working at stores, or making the next greatest invention. Every day my mother would sit there in the living room after leaving the house at 5:20 am driving over an hour and not getting home until 6:00 pm cook dinner for the family then grade papers for every kid that had to take this mandatory class until 11 pm. Ain’t no way I would be a teacher.
My first job in college was a tutor at the high school down there street as a freshman in college. 5 years later first real job teaching high school. Black Teachers are rare. But Black Male teachers are even more rare. However, I was one. seeing the students see me as a peer, family member, friend, or father figure even though I was old enough to be their parent’s oldest child that was even true in some cases.
